Composition
Each sachet contains: Calcium Carbonate 625 mg, equivalent to elemental Calcium 250 mg, Cholecalciferol 200 IU.
Pharmacology and pharmacokinetics functions of the product
Calcium and Vitamin D deficiency in children can have adverse health consequences, such as growth failure and rickets. Supracal sachet containing calcium and vitamin D3 is designed particularly for infants and children. Calcium is an essential mineral required for the development and maintenance of bone and teeth, nerve transmission, muscle contraction, vascular contraction, vasodilation, glandular secretion and blood coagulation. It also plays a role in cell membrane and capillary permeability, neurotransmitter and hormone release like gastrin secretion. Vitamin D3 in its activated form promotes absorption of calcium from tile Intestine, decreases the excretion of calcium and maintains calcium homeostasis.
Dosage and administration
Children aged 2 years and above: 1 to 3 sachets daily or as directed by the physician. Pour directly into mouth. Oro dispersible powder. No water required.
Contraindications
Children with hypocalcemia, hypercalciuria, hyperphosphatemia, hypophosphatemia, hyperparathyroidism, hypothyroidism, nephrolithiasis, renal failure, hypervitaminosis D, sarcoidosis, malignant bone diseases, myeloma & bone metastases.
Side effects
Orally, calcium supplements are well-tolerated, but the higher dosage and long-term use can cause adverse effects. The most common adverse effects are gastrointestinal in nature and includes belching, flatulence, constipation, diarrhea, and stomach upset.
Warning & Precautions
Caution to be taken in children with calcium renal stones, milk alkali syndrome, myasthenia gravis and achlorhydria.
Interactions
The concurrent use of calcium supplement along with tetracycline’s, quinolones and oral bisphosphonate may reduce their absorption. The calcium supplements should not be used along with ceftriaxone, levothyroxine, dolutegravir and elvitegravir. There is increased risk of hypercalcemia and metabolic alkalosis when used along with thiazide diuretics. Administration of calcium supplement during treatment with the antibiotic gentamicin may increase the potential for toxic effects on tile kidneys.

Pregnant women and nursing mothers should consult their physician before taking calcium supplements.
